27/09/2023 - Personal statement

Journalism has always been a career that has captivated my interest as a teenager due to its role of going out in the world to explore the fascinating stories that are generated day by day, waiting to be broadcast and reported onto big media platforms. Some of my main personal qualities and skills that have directed me to journalism have been my ambition of finding out a story and researching its background for more in-depth detail so I can make an attention-grabbing story with a specific message behind it to tell my peers.

At the moment, I am studying an Extending Diploma in Media Production and Technology. The current course helped me to develop key skills that are required in any media production career, especially journalism, some of which are: primary and secondary research for achieving an accurate target audience; mastering technological gear such as cameras and microphones, which are used to either gather unique primary research or original and fresh content; and using professional-grade editing and graphical software to polish your footage and express the tone, mood, and aesthetic of my product. To enforce and gain confidence in my media production skills, I carry out my own research and media production projects, such as documentaries or campaigns based on our chosen and passionate topics. I feel confident in continuing my career in journalism and other media areas as it feels that the course above has covered all the foundational skills and elements, and my last-year grade was a distinction, and my target grade is also a distinction.

For my work experience, I have been given the opportunity to work as a photographer assistant in a studio for human photography under the supervision of a veteran photographer. Working in a photographic environment relates a lot to the development of technological skills and enthusiasm required when working in the production team for media and journalism. This has enabled me to enhance my skills in creating original content and stories and publishing them to an open audience. Throughout my time as an assistant, my role was to operate with the cameras and light set to create a mood and meaning to the photographic content and learn to cooperate with my colleagues and boss to suggest my artistic recommendation or just point out something that could help to achieve a precise photo.

Outside of school, I have developed a strong passion for the art of photography which came from the opportunity to have access and work with a DSRL-camera from either the college's facilities or my camera, going through the art of practicing photography I learned the art of patience which it takes to polish every detail to complete your artwork besides the technological skills it takes to maneuver cameras, also throughout my life, I have participated in multiple sports careers in boxing, taekwondo, Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Ju-jitsu, practicing these sports has had a significant impact on building my character and mentality which I use in any scenario and aspects of daily life, due to the tough pathway and competitions I encountered in the sport's nature, I have developed a persistent and composed mindset to achieve my best performance and dominate into my skillset.

Within my sports career, I have stuck to my dream to get over my competition and take sport to a higher level, which has led me to take part in a taekwondo fighting competition, and with a lot of training, I have managed to push most of my opponent and get silver. As for my first ever competition, I take very big pride in this achievement as it makes me feel that I have proven my skills and determination to be a master of my passion. On the other hand, I have taken my passion for photography to multi-media platforms such as Instagram with the target of gathering followers who enjoy my art and, to my satisfaction, share my photos and professional-grade edits with an audience of passionate young photographers. This account has reached a large amount of viewership in a short amount of time, and I have even received offers from Wembley Park social media accounts and Fulham Broadway to republish my content on their pages. The constant growth and activity of this account has been a live achievement in my life, as I found it satisfactory to see a constant flow of my content among other photographers while having people who prize and like my photography content, which I put passion and feelings into.

In conclusion, I am strongly looking forward to taking my personal skills and qualities, such as being inquisitive, to a higher specialised level according to my target of starting my career in journalism. I am also excited to explore the open world of research and plan my personal journalism content in a real-world industry atmosphere. Going to university will have a huge positive impact on my life because many communities that will interest me will be shown and present. I am mostly interested in joining a sports community and developing my external knowledge so I can combine it later in my career and progress through university.

Brunel - The University offers a lot of facilities that are directed towards what I want to become and its also a very big universities that has opportunities, however the one thing I haven't liked about Brunel, it was the staff team of my course which throw me off as they seem little bit not engaged with the topic and feel like they don't explain and get the attention of the class, therefore I would like to go one more time on a open day to see them teach.

Ravensbourne - Ravensbourne university is one of the universities that I love so far due to the staff being very captivating and professional into teaching and about the course itself, the journey towards the university very simple as I take the one tube till Greenwich and I am right there.
